Pause for Thought

blog pic 29.5.19
Chris & I have been out in the pickup, (with the dogs too obviously) down the fields to feed the hedgerow birds, and we were both remarking on how calm the weather is today & how there might actually be a light at the end of a very long and wet Winter tunnel we have been in since mid-September with all of the wet, windy and extreme conditions we have all endured.
While we were on our way down the track Radio 2 ,Pause for Thought was on, a portion of the show where visiting contributors from a variety of faiths have a segment where they talk about life, their faith and everyday life. I listen if I’m in the car usually and today seemed so poignant. The contributor (I don’t know his name) mentioned about how we are all surrounded by nature but lots of us are oblivious or ignore it. The speaker had been around the country with a visiting friend and had visited many spots in the UK and ended up in Northumberland after visiting Holy Island. They had walked up through a forest, then ended up in a valley but instead of walking on they had stopped and listened to the birdsong and enjoyed just listening and feeling the beauty of nature all around them. He quoted from a study from the University of Derby about how connecting with nature can help our emotional and spiritual wellbeing, helping our mental health, bring meaning to our lives and communing with nature if we just take a little timeout to enjoy and notice what is around us. I've put the link to the site below.
As we trudged through the mud with the dogs and Chris carrying the bags of bird food, I thought about what I had just listened to and counted a few more blessings than I might have done! We are lucky, we have our health and maybe nature and the birdlife can teach us a few lessons if we just take a bit of time out and notice what we all take for granted. The birdsong did seem a bit louder, the birds are so busy and they just keep on going despite the weather, maybe we should all try to enjoy some time outdoors instead of watching tv and worrying about the constant threat of coronavirus or Brexit or whatever is headlining the news. I hope that we all get time to pause for thought about nature in the future.
