Our new Conservation and Wildlife project
Some of you will have seen our Laverock Hall Farm Facebook post with my video of the latest happenings here on the farm. We have been planning this project for a number of years and today it finally started, making this an exciting day to watch the beginnings of what will hopefully be around for generations to come.
Our Conservation wildlife pond and woodland project has begun on one of our fields. This is a much bigger project than I envisaged but maybe I’m more used to garden projects than acres of woodlands. We have measured the boundaries and organised trees and fencing with the help of a Conservation Consultant, Harry Baker-Cresswell. He has advised us from the beginning and has been a great help with the choice of trees and location. We will be planting Hazel trees ( for harvesting and also to support our lovely native red squirrels), Alder, Rowan, Willow, Scots Pine, Ash and Oak trees too. One day in the future this will be a wonderful woodland place for birds and wildlife to live and feel safe and secure.
After digging the pond, tree planting will begin but a deer proof fence will secure the whole site first, only necessary as our four legged friends eat young trees before they are established, not realising that this is all being done to help them! The other alternative to fencing would be plastic covers on each tree which is not what we wished to do, and would negate the conservation aspect too, hence the fencing, which will come down once the trees are established and provide a great habitat. Grass seeds and a wild flower mix will be sown before tree planting can take place and the trees will then take a number of weeks to plant . The project will then start to take shape instead of looking like a building site.
