Harvest Home to Pumpkin time

Harvest is almost at an end; the weather over the weekend and continuing today has been fantastic.  We’ve taken full advantage of the dry weather and high temperatures and have finished cutting the oats yesterday and then moved straight on to cutting our fields of Spring Barley.  This should be completed today after a marathon few days but its amazing how much you can complete when you have dry days in succession.

Once the contracted combine leaves us to move on to another customer we will clear the fields, bale or chop the straw and then cultivate the land ready to sow next years crops, it all sound so simple and hopefully it will be if the decent weather continues for the next few weeks.

On another note, our newest crop is doing well, the pumpkins are ripening and growing ready for ‘Pick Your Own Halloween Pumpkin’ which is a first for us.  We are hoping that families will be able to pick your own in the field, however if Coronavirus rules should prevent this we will simply pick them ourselves (yes we will be doing this by hand) and they will be available in our shop in for you to choose them that way, you will still be able to Pick your own, just not from the field.  We are so looking forward to this, Chris keeps inspecting his latest crop as they’re like nothing we have ever grown before, yes, we’ve had them in our garden and greenhouse, but never on such a large scale as this!  He even stopped the tractor he was driving on the way to the combine to send me his latest updated picture of them.

On a birdie note, the swallows seem to be leaving our shores for their migration to South Africa for the Winter, always a real sign of the Winter coming , we’ve had more than usual here on the farm, they’ve been swooping  over the dogs when I’ve walked them in the fields in the evenings, such a lovely sight. Did you know that migrating swallows can cover over 200 miles a day at speeds of up to 22 miles an hour?
