Bird Food Christmas Wreaths

bird feeding wreath construct 1

With only around 10 days to go until Christmas we do know that everyone is running around like
headless chickens, or are very smug after getting everything done! However, we just wanted to post
on here about something fun and creative that you can do with some younger family members over
their Christmas holidays as a creative arts and craft activity. Everyone likes a bit of messy play, and
making the birds happy at the same time!
Christmas wreaths are certainly getting more and more ‘big’ every year, we seem to see more of
them and more diversity – plus, theres been a lot of wreath making classes noted in the last few
years too. It’s a great thing to do, but we have got a kind of tutorial for how you can make a fantastic
wreath for not only your friends and family, but also one for your garden visitors too!
We haven’t made ours yet, but since seeing this online we’re really excited to, plus, it doesn’t need
to just be a Christmas thing – you could watch them flying onto your wreath all year round.

 Twist together bundles of long twigs and fasten with wire into a ring type shape, or use your Christmas wreath after the festivities!
 Squish lard into a soft paste in a bowl.
 Mix in your Laverock Hall bird seed, potentially with some breadcrumbs too
 Smear the mixture over pine cones and decorate with dried fruits (cranberries, cherries,
blueberries) and nuts – although, if you do use any nuts do make sure they aren’t salted.
 Attach the cones to the ring with bits of twisted wire, attaching them to the twigs.
 Decorate with festive greenery and hang up your wreath!

One important thing to remember too is that the birds are always in need of water; so if you have a
bird bath please do make sure to keep it topped up, and if you don’t then you can always just put a
bowl or Tupperware outside with some water in.
